What's special about multiples in preschool?
Starting preschool represents a major change
in the lives of all children and their parents. It is particularly
important for multiples, as this is possibly the first time
each has had extensive contact with any child other than their
sibling(s). Whilst most multiples are developing well at this
stage, there are certainly more than singleborn children,
who are a little behind in their development, physically and/or
behaviourally. The preschool can be a vital resource for identifying
potential problems in multiples and organising early intervention.
Preschool is also possibly the first time that
other children in the group have encountered twins or especially
higher multiples! Their reactions to the children may have
significant and lasting effects on the multiples’ attitudes
to each other and to other children. A kcant and lasting effects on the multiples’ attitudes
to each other and to other children. A key question is:
Do multiples get attention and develop friendships
as individuals or just because they are part of the "multiples"
at this preschool?
